The To-Do list is growing by the day and you’re missing deadlines. The stress is becoming too much. When we’re overwhelmed, we typically shut down and do nothing and unfortunately, that only makes matters worse. Here are five strategies to try when you have so much to do, you don’t know what to do.
1 – Take a breather and change your thinking
We can’t think clearly when we’re overwhelmed. Our internal voice starts to convince us that we just can’t handle it all. But we can! Take some time to relax and tell yourself, “I got this”. Changing our thinking about a situation can have a tremendous effect on our ability to move forward and get things done.
2 – Work on priorities only
Only work on things that are important and need to be done NOW. Don’t spend even one minute on tasks that are not a priority. You need your energy and focus for the things that are critical. Try the Pomodoro Technique – focusing on one task without ANY interruptions for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break and repeat. It really works!
3 – Take a close look at your schedule/calendar
To get to a place where you feel more caught up and less stressed, you’ll need to eliminate things from your schedule that are not a necessity. Determine tasks or appointments that can be re-scheduled, so you can focus on what needs to be done right away.
4 – Declutter your To-Do List
Take a few minutes and review your list. Anything that is not a priority, move to a new list, one you can conquer when your critical tasks are done. Make sure your To-Do list contains only priorities, so you can focus on those with intention.
5 – Don’t take on more work
When you have so much to do and not enough time to do it, don’t let yourself get any deeper in the hole! As nice as it is to help others, it’s important to put yourself first at this time. It’s not selfish to do so!
Sometimes we have to take a step back, before we can move forward. Take a closer look at all the things that you believe need to be done. Do you really need to do everything you thought you did?
